Identity is neither a new dictionary word nor a new recipe but the truth is, only few can really talk about it. Before we go into identity in full, let me share a story.
There was a lion that was put to bed in the midst of sheep. He ate grass with them, he did everything a sheep does until one day, and they went to the stream where he saw animals that looked like him. He was confused thou but he knew inside of him that he was carrying the wrong identity. Another day he had the opportunity, he met these animals at the stream again but these time, he noticed they chase after the sheep but did not chase him, then he saw them taking water from the stream he looked at the reflection and saw he was like this other animals. When he saw that the animals where done and we’re on their way home, he decided to go with them .And since then he found is lost identity. He always thought he was a sheep but on that day he found out he was actually a lion.
The need for young people to acquire self-identity in order to build necessary foundation for a strong character cannot be swept under the carpet. Youthful needs have made us move from right identity to a wrong identity. People think right identity is like been restricted from the so called ‘good things’ and to be free from moral restrictions, many have become slaves to immorality, making their identity unknown.
What is identity?
A dictionary defines identity as who you are, the way you think about yourself, the way you are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define you.
What is self-identity?
This on the other hand refers to the global understanding a person has of themselves. Self-Identity is composed of relatively permanent self-assessments, such as personality attributes, knowledge of one’s skills and abilities, one’s occupation and hobbies, and awareness of one’s physical attributes.
Defining one’s own personal identity can take a lifetime and to complicate matters, our identity changes throughout that period whether or not we consciously undertake a process of personal development. Identity can be through our work or profession; we may define ourselves through our profession or our work. Identity can be through the roles you play in our day-to-day lives, we may define ourselves through the roles that we play. We should have it in mind that our identity speaks about our personal.
“Your philosophy of life shapes you more than anything else.” —Anthony Robbins
Not until one has found himself, and knows what he is capable of…he would continue to be lost in the wrong identity like the lion. Knowing oneself is important or knowing your onions as the cliché goes, would go a long way in determining our success in life. So, if there’s anything more tasking anyone has to do, it is finding the right identity.
